Preparing For Kindergarten

When to start school
Your child can start Kindergarten at the beginning of the school year if they turn five on, or before, 31st July in that year. By law, all children must start school by their sixth birthday.
If your child's birthday falls between January and July, you will need to decide whether your child is ready for school or should be held back another year.
You should consider your child's pre-school teacher's advice, your child's Kindergarten Orientation experience and your child's social and emotional development, when making this decision.

Transition to school
Early in Term 4 parents and children are invited to an Orientation session. While children attend a Kindergarten class, parents are spoken to by the school executive, the P&C and representatives from the Uniform Shop.

Preparing For Kindergarten
You can help your child prepare for Kindergarten and be organised for the first day by reading a time to start school (pdf 1388 KB).
In order to ease your child's anxiety and ignite their excitement about starting at 'big school' we would encourage you to read the online book "A safe place" (pdf 3928 KB) many times and use it as a catalyst for conversations about starting school.

Best Start Kindergarten Assessment
Kindergarten students do not start on the same day as the rest of the school. Before starting school, all Kindergarten students will need to sit for their Best Start Assessment.
Best Start is a statewide assessment that measures the literacy and numeracy skills of each child as they enter Kindergarten. All government school students are administered with this assessment. This is not a test but a tool to help teachers prepare for their students' early learning experiences.
